Earbuds is a music and audio engineering panel, roundtable discussion, and networking opportunity put together by Solidarity in Sound, Biblioteka Records, and Epilogue Audio Recording and Processing Studio. It is a way to meet people working in the industry, and to help those trying to break into it. Earbuds will be featuring three diverse panelists from different areas of the music industry to come share their stories, wins, losses, tips, tricks, and answer any questions you may have about audio engineering and improving your sound.
Earbuds will be featuring three panelists from diverse and varied backgrounds: Cayce Fischer, Vanese Smith, and Cass Beau. The panel will be moderated by Samatha Dharmasena of Solidarity in Sound and Sofie Mikhaylova of Biblioteka Records.
Who can come and who is it for?
Earbuds is aimed at women, LGBTQ+ folks, POC, and trans and non-binary people. This is an audio learning space for marginalized identities. The ideal attendee will have some experience with music production and sound design, but will be looking to learn more about recording, hardware and analogue instrument usage, audio engineering, mixing, mastering, and DAWs.
What will I get out of it?
We hope that every attendee will leave Earbuds with some new knowledge in the audio engineering sphere and hopefully a new friend or contact that they can link up with later. Barring that, at the very least, you’ll get some snacks.
Who are the panelists?
Cass Beau is an audio engineer, producer, songwriter and musician based out of Tkaronto/Toronto. Cass has been active professionally in the music industry for ten years; writing and engineering with major label and indie artists alike, as well as composing and mixing for a variety of media productions.
Cayce Fischer is a self-taught synthesist and experimental musician. Her ambient/drone project AUTOTECTONIC references the creation of self-generating, self-sustaining systems, and her work explores music to process, to heal, and to share intimacy and space with others. (She/Her)
Vanese Smith produces and performs experimental electronic music under the name Pursuit Grooves. She has lead production workshops at Off Centre DJ School (Toronto), the EQ Women in Music program at Canadian Music Centre (Toronto), Waterloo Region Contemporary Music Sessions and Simon Frasier University (Vancouver). She is featured in the 2018 Spring issue of Musicworks Magazine highlighting her extensive creative history as well as her most recent and 12th album Felt Armour. Smith is a sound artist who interweaves a number of genres and tempos while seamlessly incorporating found sound and cinematic effects. She is a Red Bull Music Academy alum (Barcelona 2008) and has performed her creations live at numerous music festivals across Europe, Asia and Australia. Vanese is also one of the organizers behind Loop Sessions Toronto, a monthly gathering of producers who showcase their sampling chops.
